45 years of this

Hi Reader,

Last week I told you I would remain consistent, despite my mood or what's happening in my life. This week that's a little harder than I expected.

Today I sit at my laptop with a view I have looked at with wonder for the last 45 years. Soon it will be someone else's view. It will always be in my heart, in my memories and dreams, but I somehow can't wrap my head around it. There is too much emotion involved.

One thing is certain though. I am leaving this place with so much more than when I arrived here 45 years ago, and last night reminded me exactly why.

Last night I had the chance to spend a few hours with friends I met here literally 45 years ago. We have a bond that no one else can truly understand. We listened to a recording from one of our summer nights back in 1988. We were young teens, and that night I brought my cassette player out and recorded our night. I think that may have been the best decision I ever made.

We had the best of laughs and the best of times. Those endless summers, with no cell phones or electronics. Just kids together, loving the same place and making memories to last a lifetime.

I may have to leave this place behind, but I will always have these friends and the priceless memories. It's an amazing gift, and no matter the time between our reunions, we pick right back up as if it's the summer of 1988, and I am just so thankful for it all.

I'm not sure what's next for me, but this view will remain in my mind and heart forever.

This is really what When A Season Ends is about. It's not only about losing a person. It's a place that shaped you, a stage of life closing, a child packing up and leaving a house quieter than it's ever been. Different kinds of endings, but the same question comes from all of them. How do I carry this forward instead of just grieving what's gone?

If you're in a season like that right now, whatever kind of ending it is for you, When A Season Ends was written for exactly this. And empty nest is one of those seasons I'll be writing a lot more about this fall, since so many of you are heading into it too.

There are good things still ahead, even when we can't see them clearly from here.

Thanks for being here and have a great weekend.❤️

Hi Reader, I took a picture of myself in my workout clothes last week. I meant it to be a "before" photo, to pull up later when things have changed. I was being optimistic about it. Then I looked at it and felt sad, which was not at all what I had planned. There's this idea that women our age let ourselves go, like we stop caring at some point along the way. That has not been my experience. I've been doing the same things I've always done. My body just changed the terms without telling me,...

Hi Reader, It's been a couple weeks since I've sent my weekly note to you. There's something to be said about routine and consistency. It keeps you motivated and builds momentum. I've fallen out of that routine a bit this summer with good reason. Mix a few major life changes with summer in the pot and here we are. The reason I started writing and creating this blog remains the same. I was inspired by love and loss and always will be. I had a need to write about those experiences and wanted to...

Hi Reader, I missed my usual Friday morning with you. I've been away from home dealing with something personal this week, so I'm writing to you a day off schedule. In the middle of all this, my phone rang. It was one of my sons. Something in his world had gone sideways, and I could hear it in his voice right away. Before we hung up, he asked me when I was coming home. That question snapped me out of where my head has been. I think about how much has changed since my boys grew up. The house is...
